What an epoxy floor coating is
An epoxy floor coating is a resin system applied over properly prepared concrete. The epoxy forms a strong bond to the slab and cures into a tough surface that helps protect the concrete underneath. Because it is applied as a continuous coating, it creates a seamless floor, and it can be carried up the wall as an integral cove base so there is no open joint where the floor meets the wall.
Epoxy systems come in many colors and textures, from smooth high-gloss finishes to broadcast flake and slip-resistant textures. Different epoxy chemistries are offered depending on the conditions of use, which is why PCC starts by understanding how each floor will be used.

Joints where dirt and moisture collect
A seamless coating with integral cove base removes the floor-to-wall joint and many of the cracks where contaminants can build up.
Oil, fuel and fluid staining
In hangars, garages and plants, the right epoxy system resists staining and many chemicals, including oils and automotive and aircraft fluids.
Dark work areas
Light-colored epoxy reflects more light, which can improve visibility under aircraft and vehicles and around equipment.
Selection considerations and limitations
- Not all epoxies perform the same. Chemical resistance varies by formulation. Share the specific chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and cleaning methods your floor will see.
- UV exposure. Many epoxies can amber or change color in sunlight. Where color stability matters, a urethane system or topcoat may be the better choice.
- Heat and thermal shock. Hot water washdown, steam cleaning and hot spills can be hard on thin epoxy coatings. Urethane or troweled mortar systems are often considered for those areas.
- Slab moisture. Moisture moving up through concrete is a common cause of coating failure. Testing comes first, and a moisture vapor control coating may be required.
- Slip resistance is a choice. Smooth finishes clean easily but can be slippery when wet. Texture, aggregate and maintenance all affect slip resistance.
- Downtime. Surface preparation, cure times and odor affect scheduling. Plan the installation window with your estimator.

Most of the work in a lasting floor is in the preparation. Under PCC's 0 Punch List Program, the job is handled turn-key:
- Consultation and site assessment to understand traffic, chemicals, cleaning and schedule.
- Testing of the existing slab, including moisture where needed.
- Tear-out and disposal of existing flooring when required.
- Surface preparation and repairs so the coating can bond to sound concrete.
- Installation of primers, body coats, cove base and finish coats.
- Final clean-up before the area is handed back.

How long does an epoxy floor installation take?
It depends on the floor area, the condition of the slab, the amount of surface preparation and the epoxy system selected, because each coat needs time to cure before the next is applied and before traffic returns. Pacific Coast Contracting builds the schedule around your facility's available window during the estimate, so ask about cure times early in planning.
Can epoxy be installed over an existing floor or old coating?
Sometimes, but the existing surface has to be evaluated first. On existing facilities, preparation can include tearing out old flooring, removing mastic, repairing cracks and damaged areas, and grinding the concrete so the new epoxy can bond. Pacific Coast Contracting assesses the slab and recommends the preparation needed for the system selected.
Is epoxy flooring chemical resistant?
Epoxy floor coatings resist many chemicals and cleaning agents, but resistance varies by formulation, concentration, temperature and exposure time. What is an integral cove base?
An integral cove base is the floor coating carried up the wall in a smooth curve, usually a few inches high, so there is no open joint between the floor and the wall. It makes the floor easier to clean and removes a place where dirt, moisture and bacteria can collect. PCC offers cove base with its seamless epoxy systems.
