What polished concrete is
Polished concrete is the slab itself, mechanically ground and polished with progressively finer abrasives, typically with a densifier and a protective sealer or guard. The result is a hard, low-maintenance floor that reflects light, without a separate coating on top.
The work is in the preparation
Like most flooring jobs, the bulk of the work is in the prep and in setting the project up for success. For existing facilities, that can include tearing out old flooring, removing mastic, repairing cracks and damaged surfaces, then grinding before polishing begins.

Selection considerations and limitations
- The slab shows through. Polishing reveals the concrete's existing color variation, patches and cracks. Repairs can be made, but they remain visible.
- Chemical exposure. Polished concrete is not a seamless chemical-resistant barrier. Areas with harsh chemicals are usually better served by an epoxy or urethane system.
- Stain protection. Sealers and guards help resist staining but need periodic maintenance.
- Existing coverings. Adhesives and mastic from old flooring must be fully removed before polishing.

Polished Concrete FAQ
What does polished concrete preparation involve?
Preparation depends on the slab. On existing facilities, Pacific Coast Contracting may tear out old flooring, remove mastic and adhesives, repair cracks and damaged areas, and grind the concrete before polishing begins. New slabs usually need less removal but still require grinding and repairs. Most of the work in a good polished floor is in this preparation.
Is polished concrete slippery?
Polished concrete has a smooth, reflective surface, but traction depends on the level of polish, the sealer or guard used, and whether the floor is wet or contaminated. Keeping floors clean and dry matters. Pacific Coast Contracting can discuss finish options for areas where slip resistance is a concern.
Should I choose polished concrete or an epoxy floor?
Polished concrete suits retail and commercial spaces that want a durable, low-maintenance floor with the look of concrete. Epoxy or urethane coatings are usually better where floors see harsh chemicals, need color or safety markings, or need a seamless cove base.
